ARTIST STATEMENT
I was born and raised in the San Fernando Valley to Mexican parents who immigrated to the United States in the late 1960s. My art influences are prominent in my work as I grew up attending several Catholic masses, meticulously observing weeping virgin statues and glowing portraits of angels alongside the macabre sight of a dying Jesus Christ on a cross. I took mental notes of the colors, composition and line weights in these pieces and attempted my own versions at home.
Religious tones compliment the illustrative style I developed over the years as I was inspired by the cartoons that raised me in the 90s and early 2000s. Although I like to tackle serious topics relating to my sex, I try to find some humor or fun in the pieces I make. As someone that is highly intuitive, the process of art making is more important to me than the final piece itself. I love the fluidity art provides me and the control I have over my work. In a lot of ways I have self soothed myself through art from an early age and used my skill to cope with the ebbs and flows of my life. As much as I battle with perfectionism in my mind, my art is a reflection of my soul. Deep feelings processed through various mediums, my perfectionism is only an illusion.
